Abstract:
With the development of long-span bridges and the improvement in cable strength, higher requirements areplaced on the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of zinc alloys for thermal castable cables. Therefore, thedevelopment of suitable zinc alloy materials is urgent. Zn-xAl-1Cu (x= 6, 7, 8 and 9, wt.%) was prepared by metal moldgravity casting. The microstructure, mechanical properties, fluidity and corrosion resistance of the alloy were studied bymeans of optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, tensile testing, fluidity testing and corrosion weight loss testing. The results show that the microstructure of the alloy is composed of a primary α-Al phase and an α-Al+η-Zn eutecticphase. With increasing Al content, the number of primary α-Al phases clearly increases, and the distribution is moreuniform. The tensile strength of the alloy first increases but then decreases slightly, but it has little effect on the elongationof the alloy. When the Al content is 8 wt.%, the tensile strength and elongation of the alloy are the greatest, whichare 258 MPa and 1.83% , respectively. In addition, an increase in the Al content effectively increases the corrosionresistance but reduces the fluidity of the alloy. The corrosion rate of the Zn-9Al-1Cu alloy is 0.103 g/(m2·h), which isapproximately 37% lower than that of the Zn-6Al-1Cu alloy.
